The terms wellbeing and mental health have been featured in the media a lot recently and we are being forever encouraged to check in with ourselves. While being enrolled at university there are a number of services available to me to help me do just this, but I am being made increasingly aware that when my MA ends these services will not be so easily found in the adult world.
It’s all well and good supporting children through school and young adults through university, but postgraduates often need a lot of support when university ends and the job market is narrow and house prices are sky high. This combination of realities is overwhelming and can make the future feel unclear and hopeless at times, which is why postgrads should be reminded as often as possible that the end of university is not the end of your life, it’s the start of a whole new one.
I have yet to figure out the perfect way to calm nerves about future possibilities and I am by no means an expert in keeping anxiety under constant control but what I do know is that what we do have right now is a lot of time. Travel opportunities and schemes that allow you to work and intern in new places are growing by the year, and in my opinion taking the time to figure out what you want to do rather than rush into something, is a perfectly acceptable choice. The first job you find doesn’t have to be the only job if you don’t want it to be, and comparing the perhaps quick success of your friends to your own doesn’t make your own victories any less significant. I have no idea what I want do when I finish my degree or what I want to do with it, but right now I’m trying not to let it faze me and I would advise anyone in the same position to do the same.
Worrying alone doesn’t help but talking to other people really does especially people in similar situations, Instagram accounts like galswhograduate_ provide fabulous content about keeping positive and remind you that you are not alone in this unfamiliar territory. I’m hoping that through this blog I will hopefully be able to do a similar thing because while I am very unsure about what my future holds, I would love to be able to figure it out slowly, and maybe help out some others along the way.
If that sounds like something, you’d be interested in then keep your eye out for upcoming posts and if there’s any topics you’d be interested to read about, mental health related or otherwise, then send me a message through my contact page.
